New Years Recipes for Kids

These New Years recipes are easy and fun for kids. Please share your own recipes for New Years with us!

New Years Eve Confetti Cake

This cake can be made for New Years eve. Decorate cake with festive party favors or sparklers.

2 packages white or yellow cake mix
vanilla frosting
1 package colorful candy sprinkles

Follow cake mix instructions and add sprinkles (confetti) to mixture before pouring into 2 cake rounds (stir sprinkles in gently with only a few strokes). Bake 2 round cakes according to package instructions. Let cool. Spread frosting over top of one cake and cover top with sprinkles. Place one of the cakes on top of the other cake with sprinkles on top. Frost the entire cake. Cover top with sprinkles and toss sprinkles around the sides.

Black Eyed Peas for New Years Day

Every new years day my mother made black eyed peas for good luck.

2 cups dried black eyed peas
1 small ham hock
1 medium onion, chopped
4 slices bacon, cooked
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
a little cayenne pepper

In a large bowl soak dried black eyed peas in water overnight or for about 8 hours. The next day, drain water. In a saucepan add black eyed peas and add enough water to cover all of the dried peas plus an extra 2 inches. Bring to a boil then reduce to low heat, cover, and simmer for about 30 minutes. Add ham hock, onion, garlic, and seasoning. Then add some more water. Bring to a boil again, reduce to low heat, cover and simmer for another hour. Taste it and add more seasoning if it needs it. Serve with some Tabasco or other hot sauce and sweet pickle relish. This also goes well with corn bread.
