Hamster Toilet Paper Treats

by Cosette
(Houston, Texas, US)

This is a fun treat for your hamster!

toilet paper roll (empty of course!)
peanut butter
seeds
popcorn (plain, no oils, etc.)
dried fruit (Note: be careful: too much sugar)
Cereal: Cheerios, pieces of bread/toast
whatever else your hamster likes, but nothing fresh (veggies, fruit)

Stuff the middle of the roll with all your treats and twist the ends to close it. You can tie it with hemp cord or wire, too. Place in your hamsters cage and watch as he tries to get into it...

at yuo are so cruel
by: Hampsterlover

Hamsters like to chew on the cardboard, it gives them something to do other then being bored in a small area.

Just saying...

The person who said "hamstern" is german for gnaw, it's not, it actually means hoard because they use their cheek pouch to store food. Just wanted to correct you.

actually, most will like it

Well, the idea behind a treat is to be an addition to the hamster's regular food, which they should always have plenty of.

The word hamster comes from the German word "hamstern" which means to gnaw. Hamsters have a constant drive to chew on things, which is why we give them wood and cardboard toys to chew on.

Unless the hamster is too young and small, or too old and tired, it will enjoy chewing the cardboard to get to the treats inside. Treats that come inside cardboard boxes are also available in pet stores but cost around 6 U.S. dollars per package.

It is probably not a good idea to use wire or cord to tie the ends of the toilet paper tubes in this recipe though, because the hamster could swallow it or get tangled up. Twisting or folding the ends should work well. I am a former veterinary technician and I approve this recipe.

horrible recipe
by: you are so cruel

why don't you put it in a bowl. it isn't a treat if they have to eat cardboard to get to it. you are teasing those poor hamsters. that sounds so cruel that those poor little babies have to do that i am never using that recipe!
